Seven Derbyshire councils will share £1.4 million in Government funding to help provide accommodation for people experiencing homelessness this winter.

The funding is part of a £442 million national package announced by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who has pledged to offer everyone sleeping rough a route off the streets this Christmas.

The £1.4 million for Derbyshire will be shared between seven housing authorities:

  • Amber Valley – £105,569
  • Bolsover – £72,360
  • Chesterfield – £167,865
  • Derby – £801,329
  • Erewash – £114,298
  • High Peak – £82,602
  • North East Derbyshire – £77,458

Derbyshire Dales and South Derbyshire will not receive a share of the new funding.

Government guidance says areas with fewer numbers of people sleeping rough should use existing funding to provide support.

The Government says the funding will help provide accommodation and support this winter, as well as creating more than 1,000 settled homes across England over the next three years.

Claire Ward, Labour's East Midlands Mayor, said:

“Everyone deserves a safe place to call home, and this funding will help us support people facing homelessness across the East Midlands and strengthen local efforts to end rough sleeping. Homelessness is a complex challenge that no one organisation can solve alone.

"That’s why we’ll be working closely with our councils, charities, housing providers and other partners to make sure this funding reaches the people who need it most.

"By working together, we can help prevent people from becoming homeless, provide support to those in crisis, and give more people the stability they need to rebuild their lives and look ahead with hope.”

The East Midlands Combined County Authority will receive £10.5 million over two years, with £5.1 million due from April 2027 and a further £5.3 million in 2028-29.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said:

“No-one should have to bed down in a doorway or outside a station. But we’ve seen it for so long that it feels like Westminster has started to accept it.

“I won’t accept it. That’s why my first instruction as Prime Minister was to end rough sleeping. And it’s why today we’re getting started with a national drive to get everyone in for Christmas.

“We did it in the pandemic. We can do it again. But it needs all of us. Government will put the money in. But I’m asking leaders in communities and sectors across society to play their part locally, too.

“Let’s get people out the cold. And let’s bring back hope.”

Ministry of Housing data recorded 52 homeless people across Derbyshire during a one-night assessment carried out between October 1 and November 30, 2025.
