Nottinghamshire car murder accused appears before judge via prison video-link
Duane Anthony is accused of killing non-league footballer Tyler Fairman in May
A 40-year-old man has appeared in court via prison video-link, charged with murder, five counts of attempted murder and driving while disqualified.
Duane Anthony, who is accused of killing non-league footballer Tyler Fairman, was not required to enter pleas to any of the charges after his legal team asked for further time to take instructions from him.
Anthony, of Marton Road, Bulwell, is charged in connection with an incident in Market Place, Arnold, near Nottingham, in the early hours of Saturday May 9, in which a Vauxhall Astra struck a group of pedestrians.
Mr Fairman, who played for Woodthorpe Park Rangers, died in hospital three days after the incident.
Anthony appeared at Nottingham Crown Court via a link to HMP Manchester on Monday for an eight-minute hearing attended by members of Mr Fairman’s family.
Adjourning the case after legal submissions, Judge Nirmal Shant KC told the defendant he would be required to appear in court in person on June 29, ahead of the trial date already set for October 7.
Woodthorpe Park Rangers has previously said that three members of its team, including the manager, were struck by a car following an end-of-season awards night.
In a tribute issued last month, Mr Fairman’s family said of the 26-year-old: “There are no words now, nor will there ever be, to truly describe how broken this has left us all.
“Our hearts are shattered, and the world has become a much darker place without him in it.
“Anyone who knew Tyler knew there was never a bad word to say about him. He was the kind of person who would do anything for anybody. He was always there for everyone and was a devoted partner, a loyal friend, a loving son and a father figure to so many people around him.
“If somebody needed support, Tyler would be there in a heartbeat.”
