Nottingham's tram network is facing potential disruption as workers have voted overwhelmingly for strike action, aligning with the city's annual Goose Fair set to begin later this month.

The decision was announced by the GMB Union, which represents around 200 tram workers including drivers, ticket office staff, and maintenance teams, after receiving an 88% vote in favour of the strike due to issues surrounding pay and working conditions.

Strike actions will begin from 05:00 on Saturday, 26th September 2026, lasting until 04:59 on Monday, 28th September, before resuming from 05:00 on Friday, 2nd October and concluding on 4th October. During intervals between these periods, tram workers have opted not to work overtime, extending potential disruptions throughout the week.

Colin Whyatt, GMB Regional Organiser, highlighted the significance of Goose Fair, saying "Goose Fair is peak time for our tram network, with tens of thousands set to descend on Nottingham for the weeklong celebration."

In response, Nottingham Express Transit (NET) confirmed the upcoming disruption after nine months of negotiations failed to produce an agreement. Sarah Turner, managing director of NET, expressed concern over risks to attendee safety due to added pressure on city transport routes.

Turner further stated that the salary increases demanded by GMB are financially untenable despite previous increases, which collectively have brought their pay levels well above the national average.

NET plans to implement a temporary timetable during the strike period and remain open to further discussions with GMB to find a resolution, emphasizing the importance of Nottingham’s tram network as a vital city infrastructure.
