Nottingham Forest have lost out to Aston Villa in their attempt to reach the Europa League final.

Their European journey comes to an end in the semi-finals, after a 4-1 defeat over two legs to Aston Villa.

The Reds had gone into the second leg with a 1-0 lead, thanks to Chris Wood’s penalty at the City Ground a week ago.

But it was a case of so near yet so far in the return fixture and missed out on a place in the final as they were beaten 4-0 on the night.

Forest, who were without Morgan Gibbs-White, were hoping to follow in the footsteps of their own European greats of yesteryear, but will leave Villa Park with regrets.

Forest’s focus now turns back to the English Premier League, where they host Newcastle United on Sunday.

They have a six-point buffer to the relegation zone with three matchdays remaining.
