A man who assaulted two women – including raping one of them – has been jailed.

Sajid Bashir subjected both women to assaults which included strangling them until they passed out. He also threatened them and smashed their belongings.

One of the women reported Bashir to police in 2023, telling officers that he had assaulted her by kicking her, punching her, strangling her and throwing things at her.

The woman, who was known to Bashir, was also raped by him.

A second woman also reported him to officers in 2025, detailing how he had held her hostage, threatened her with a knife, punched her in the face and strangled her.

These offences were committed while he was on bail for the offences against the first victim. He was then remanded in custody.

Bashir was subsequently charged with a number of offences against both women.

He admitted offences of assault and strangulation against one of the women. He was found guilty of rape, strangulation, stalking causing serious alarm and distress and controlling and coercive behaviour against the other woman after a trial.

The 27-year-old, of Iron Gate, Derby, has now been jailed for a total of 16 years, which includes a four-year extension for violent and sexual offences.

He was also handed restraining orders banning him from having any contact with either of the women.

Detective Sergeant Michael Verdi, who led the investigation for the 2023 offences, said: “Bashir behaved appallingly towards this woman, and I know that she will continue to deal with the effects of his actions for some time to come.

“I’d like to praise her courage in coming forward and reporting these offences and thank her for her strength and resilience throughout. I know it’s been a long time to get to this point but I am grateful to her for her support as we worked to bring Bashir to justice.”

Detective Constable Kate Walmsley, who led the investigation for the 2025 offences, added: “What is clear from these offences is that Bashir’s attitude towards and treatment of women is disgusting.

“I have no doubt that it took the victim in my case enormous bravery to come forward and report him and I’d like to commend her for that.

“Bashir is now going to be behind bars for some time to come and I hope that both of these women are now going to be able to begin looking to the future knowing that he is off the streets.”
