Man arrested in Wigston on suspicion of terrorism offence
Police investigation into suspected support for Daesh
A 27-year-old man from Wigston, Leicestershire, has been arrested by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) on suspicion of expressing support for the proscribed organisation Daesh.
The arrest, made on Monday, is part of an ongoing investigation into support of the organisation, contrary to section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
As part of the investigation, officers are currently searching a residential property in Wigston.
The operation was a coordinated effort involving CTPSE, Counter Terrorism Policing East Midlands, and Leicestershire Police.
Inspector Chris Day, Neighbourhood Policing Commander for Wigston, reassured the community that the arrest was part of a pre-planned operation.
"I appreciate arrests of this nature may cause some people in the community to feel concerned, however this arrest today took place as part of a pre-planned operation," Inspector Day of Leicestershire Police said.
"We are working to support our colleagues in Counter Terrorism Policing as their investigation continues. People in the local area may notice an increased police presence while search activity takes place. If anyone has any concerns, or information they think may be relevant, please speak to an officer."
The arrested individual is currently in police custody.
