Two teenagers have died following a collision on the M1 southbound shortly before junction 20 near Lutterworth.

At around 1.33pm, a blue car travelling along Gilmorton Lane left the road bridge above the carriageway and collided with a southbound minibus.

Emergency services including Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, and East Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene.

Four people in the white Fiat Ducato minibus were taken to hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The driver, a man, has been discharged, while three women remain hospitalised.

The occupants of the blue car, both teenagers, were pronounced dead on arrival by the attending ambulance crew.

Leicestershire Police are appealing to anyone who was driving on Gilmorton Lane or the M1 in the vicinity of junction 20 around 1.30pm to come forward.

They are particularly interested in dashcam footage that might have captured either vehicle before the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.

The M1 has since reopened in both directions.
