Twenty-five years ago, people across the world watched in disbelief as the 9/11 attacks unfolded in New York.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed, including 343 firefighters who lost their lives while trying to save others.

A quarter of a century on, their bravery is still remembered by firefighters here in the East Midlands.

Nottinghamshire firefighter Ben Shepherd says he can still remember the day vividly, and the courage shown by those who responded continues to inspire firefighters every day.

He said:

"Even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, you saw the absolute best in humanity. Everybody came together."

For many, despite the passage of 25 years, the memories from that day remain clear.

Danny Wallace moved to Nottingham from California a year after the attacks.

She says the images she watched on television that day are still vivid.

"It was so severe at the time. I remember sitting in front of the TV staring at the atrocity happening."

Here in the East Midlands, people are still remembering where they were, who they were with, and how they first heard the news.

A quarter of a century later, the impact of 9/11 is still being felt, and the bravery of those who responded continues to inspire.
