Man escapes through first-floor window after e-bike catches fire in Derby home
Firefighters warn about the dangers of charging e-bikes at home
A man in Derby had to jump from a first-floor window when his home caught fire, believed to be caused by an e-bike battery.
Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service received a call at 3am on 19th June after police officers noticed a fire at a terraced house on Uttoxeter New Road.
Fire engines from Ascot Drive, Kingsway, and Nottingham Road attended the scene and found the property engulfed in flames.
Fortunately, the man managed to escape without any injuries, and no one else was inside at the time.
An investigation revealed that the fire was likely caused by an electrical issue linked to an e-bike being charged inside the home.
The fire spread quickly, resulting in significant damage, including the collapse of an internal wall.
Fire Safety Advice
Station Manager Johny Smith emphasised the risks associated with lithium batteries used in e-bikes and similar charging devices.
“Fires involving lithium batteries can escalate rapidly,” Smith said.
“We advise against charging e-bikes overnight while sleeping and ensuring escape routes remain clear.”
Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service has issued guidelines for e-bike users to help prevent similar incidents.
These include avoiding overnight charging, ensuring escape routes aren't blocked, using correct chargers, unplugging fully charged devices, and keeping batteries away from heat and flammable materials.
Residents are urged to install working smoke alarms on every level of their home.
