A man has admitted killing an 82-year-old pensioner who was found with stab wounds in Derby.

Gerard Ring was attacked in Whitecross Gardens, off Kedleston Road, at around 2.20pm on September 6 last year.

Julian Donoher, 51, of Whitecross Gardens, appeared at Derby Crown Court on Monday where he denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.

Judge Shaun Smith KC told Donoher he will be sentenced on September 22.

Remanding the defendant in custody, the judge said: “I’m going to sentence you next Tuesday. You will be over the (video) link, you don’t have to come to court.

“It’s going to be a hospital order of some description.”

Donoher – who wore a white T-shirt, grey tracksuit bottoms and a dark-coloured zipped hoodie – said thank you as he left the dock.
