Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire that damaged three properties on Normanton Road in Derby.

A 57-year-old and a 53-year-old were arrested after emergency services were called to the scene just before 1:20pm on 1st August, police said.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called at 1:16pm on Saturday 1st August after a 999 call reporting a fire in a garden.

By the time crews arrived, the fire had already spread to three flats.

Crews from Long Eaton, Heanor and Kingsway attended, along with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Highfields and Stapleford, supported by an aerial ladder platform, the fire service said.

At the time, people living nearby were advised to avoid the area and to keep windows and doors closed if they could see or smell smoke.

Adjoining roads were closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the blaze, but have since reopened.

A small number of nearby properties were evacuated as a precaution, and those affected have since returned home.

Police confirmed no one was injured during the fire.
