Chesterfield man jailed for over 10 years after Manchester city centre rape
He sexually assaulted a woman who was intoxicated and vulnerable after a night out in June 2022
A Chesterfield man is starting a 10 and a half year prison term for sexually assaulting a woman on a night out in Manchester.
Benjamin Wilson, 35 and of Norwood Avenue, has been sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison for three counts of rape and false imprisonment.
His crimes were committed in Manchester city centre in June 2022.
Wilson exploited an intoxicated and vulnerable woman, guiding her into a taxi and later raping her at a flat in Manchester.
After the victim reported the incident, Greater Manchester Police were able to trace Wilson through the use of CCTV, as well as mobile phone data and bank transactions.
Hundreds of hours were also dedicated to collecting witness accounts which led to Wilson's arrest in Derbyshire.
Detective Constable Phillip Sargeant of Greater Manchester Police said:
“I am awestruck not only by the courage of the victim in coming forward, but also by her patience and resilience in waiting for justice."
“The impact on her, her family and her support network has been profound. I hope today’s sentence provides some measure of closure and enables them to move on from this traumatic experience."
“We have worked hard to support her throughout, allowing her to guide the pace of the investigation and how she engaged with the process."
“I hope this case reassures others that they will be taken seriously and supported sensitively by Greater Manchester Police, no matter how long it takes.”
