Bin collections to change in Leicestershire over Christmas
Rubbish may not be collected on the day you expect it to be
Last updated 14th Dec 2025
As usual, festive celebrations will mean a lot more rubbish to be thrown out, coupled with confusing changes to bin collection days.
Your rubbish might not be collected on the day you usually expect it to be. Anyone who does not drag their wheelie bin out on the right days runs the risk of it being left overflowing.
And in each area of the county, the rules are different. We have compiled this straightforward guide of the alterations to council collection dates.
Leicester
Most people in the city will see their collections shift either a day earlier or later over the Christmas period.
Those who have Tuesday collections will see their bins collected on Monday, December 22, and Monday, December 29 instead. For Wednesday collections, this will be on Tuesday, December 23, and Tuesday, December 30, and for Thursday collections it will be a Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve pick-up.
However, those who would have their bins typically emptied on a Friday will instead have their collections on Saturday, December 27. There will be no change on Friday, January 2, however.
Residents are asked to ensure all waste is out by 7am.
Blaby
Blaby District Council has said there will be no collections at all between Thursday, December 25, and Tuesday, December 30. Nor will waste be taken away on New Year’s Day.
Instead, residents will receive a double collection both before and after Christmas, where both your refuse and recycling bins will be emptied on the same day. No refuse or recycling waste left outside of bins will be collected.
Residents are asked to put out their bins by 6.30am.
Charnwood
Bins collections for Charnwood borough residents will only change when they fall on a bank holiday. This means that bins normally emptied on Thursday will not be taken on Christmas Day, but instead on Saturday, December 27.
Boxing Day bins will be taken on Monday, December 29, and New Year bins will be taken on Saturday, January 3. All other collections will be as normal. Waste should be out by 6am.
Harborough
Similar arrangements will be in place for the Harborough district. Collections will not take place on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
Instead those on a blue schedule will see their recycling taken on Saturday, December 27 and black bin emptied on Saturday, January 3. For the yellow and rural schedule, black bins will be collected on Saturday, December 20, and recycling on Monday, January 5.
There will also be no collections on Boxing Day, so people on the blue schedule who would have seen their recycling taken that day will instead be asked to put their bins out on Monday, December 29. For the yellow and rural routes, it will be Monday, December 22, for black bins.
Hinckley and Bosworth
Anyone in Hinckley and Bosworth borough who would have expected a bin collection on Christmas Day will instead see their black bin taken on Monday, December 22. Boxing Day black bin collections will be on Tuesday, December 23.
New Year’s Day collections will move to Wednesday, December 31, for blue bins, while brown bin waste removals are to be suspended between Monday, December 22, and Friday, January 2, inclusive.
Melton
Residents in Melton will also see widespread changes to their collection dates. Bins set to be emptied on Monday, December 22, will instead be emptied on Saturday, December 20. Collections on Tuesday, December 23, Wednesday, December 24, and Thursday, December 25, will each move a day earlier.
Boxing Day pick-ups will instead take place on Saturday, December 27. Meanwhile, any bins that would have been emptied on New Year’s Day and Friday, January 2, will each be moved to a day later.
North West Leicestershire
In North West Leicestershire districts, there will be no bins emptied between Christmas and New Year, inclusive. The sole exception to this is if households normally receive a collection on a Thursday.
In this case, they will see their bins taken on Tuesday, December 30, instead of on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Garden waste collections are suspended until Monday, January 12, while bulky waste collections are suspended between Thursday, December 18, and Tuesday, January 13.
Residents are being urged to check their waste collection information “carefully” as there are also changes to which bins and containers can be put out over the festive period. Bins should be out by 6am.
Oadby and Wigston
Oadby and Wigston borough residents will also see disruption for the bank holidays. Anyone who normally puts their bins out on a Thursday will have recycling collected on Monday, December 22, and their general waste on Tuesday, December 23, instead of a Christmas Day collection.
New Year’s Day collections will move to Saturday, January 3. Meanwhile the Boxing Day bank holiday will see people scheduled for a Friday collection instead visited by the binmen on Saturday, December 27.
Collections on other dates remain unchanged. Residents are also advised that rubbish left in bags next to bins will not be taken, while any large cardboard boxes should be flattened and placed by the side of the recycling bin.
