Plans to change the use of the upper floors of a Weymouth Esplanade building to five flats have been refused.

The site, the former Barclays Bank, is to the rear of the Black Dog pub with the changes supported by Weymouth Town Council.

But it had been met with objections from Dorset Council’s Environmental Protection team, which said noise from the pub and smells from a fish and chip shop had not been adequately considered for future residents.

They also said there was a risk of overlooking of neighbouring buildings from the top floor flat.

A separate proposal to convert an Esplanade betting shop into an adult gaming centre was approved by planning officers.
