A man, who has been convicted of a violent assault near Poole, has been jailed.

Police say this comes after a 'detailed investigation' by officers - with Darryl John Cornish, 41 and of Upton, put behind bars at Bournemouth Crown Court on Tuesday (1 April) for charges of non-fatal strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It follows an incident back in August last year.

On Thursday (29 August), Cornish subjected a woman to a sustained assault at an address in Upton.

During the attack Cornish was reported to have strangled the woman, thrown her to the ground, pushed her down the stairs, and thrown her belongings.

The victim fled the address having sustained injuries to her arms, hands, back and neck.

Officers launched an investigation into the incident, carrying out door-to-door enquiries, taking numerous statements and reviewing mobile phone footage.

Following enquiries, Cornish was subsequently charged in relation to the incident. He was jailed for 26 months.

Police Constable Harry Chaplin, of Dorset Police, said: “Domestic abuse is a top priority for the Force and we are fully committed to supporting victims and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.

“Darryl Cornish subjected his victim to a sustained and violent assault, which has had a lasting impact on her mental and physical wellbeing. I am pleased that he is now behind bars and facing the consequences for his actions

“I also want to praise the victim for the courage she has shown in supporting our investigation. I hope her bravery will help to give other victims the strength to come forward and report domestic abuse to us, in the knowledge that we will fully investigate the matter and hold offenders to account.”

If you have been a victim of domestic abuse or you know someone who is being abused, you are urged to report it to Dorset Police - and this can be done in confidence.

If abuse is in progress and someone is in immediate danger, call 999. Otherwise contact officers at www.dorset.police.uk or by calling 101.
