New figures reveal a marked increase in the number of people quitting smoking in the South West, following proactive efforts from the NHS as part of the national No Smoking Day campaign.

For the year 2024/25, the region achieved over 25,000 quit‑date sets, surpassing targeted goals by nearly 6,000.

This represents a significant 72% increase compared to 2021 numbers.

This positive trend is estimated to have prevented numerous cardiovascular events and premature deaths annually, according to NHS data.

Dr Justin Varney-Bennett, South West Regional Director of Public Health, noted the commitment of individuals in the area to abandon smoking and the utilization of local services for support.

Dr Justin said, “It’s really good news to see that more people in the South West have made a commitment to give up smoking and are accessing the many local stop smoking services that are available in their communities.”

He further emphasized the importance of No Smoking Day in helping individuals either decide to quit or continue on their cessation journey.

Among those who have benefited from the local services is retired nurse Gina Kellaway from Weymouth, Dorset.

Gina, a long-time smoker, successfully quit cigarettes by utilizing nicotine replacement therapy and reaching out for support through LiveWell Dorset.

She said, "This is stupid, my body is telling me I have to do something. I’d been thinking of giving up for a while, but the heart palpations were the icing on the cake."

With coaching and other resources like the NHS Smokefree App, Gina has noticed considerable improvements in her health and well-being.

She has seen physical changes, such as healthier skin and hair, improved lung function, and substantial financial savings.

Reflecting on her journey, Gina advised against discouragement in the face of past setbacks in quitting.

"It is never too late and no matter how many times you may have failed in the past, never give up giving up," she added.

For those considering quitting smoking, the NHS Smokefree App and other resources offer around-the-clock support and encouragement.
