Firefighters tackle multiple blazes on Dorset's heathland

35 firefighters were on the scene at the height of the blazes.

Firefighters have spent the night putting out multiple blazes on Newton, Decoy, and Middlebere Heath in Studland, Dorset.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service were first called out just after 11pm on Saturday (2nd August) to Decoy Heath.

They said, "Crews from Wareham, Poole, Swanage, Wimborne, Christchurch, two water carriers from Wareham and Poole, and lightweight off-road vehicles from Bere Regis, Poole, Christchurch, Maiden Newton and Cranborne attended."

By 1am on Sunday (3rd August), the fire was completely out.

Another call was made to emergency services at midnight on Saturday (2nd August) that there was also a few miles east, at Middlebere Heath.

At the height of this blaze, there were 35 firefighters on the scene.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service said, "Crews from Swanage, Westbourne, Wimborne, Redhill Park, Christchurch, Bridport, Ferndown initially attended alongside the Unimog from Wareham, lightweight off-road and support vehicles from Wimborne, Blandford, Christchurch, Hamworthy and Bere Regis as well as a water carrier from Ringwood (Hampshire and Isle of Wight FRS)."

By 2am on Sunday (3rd August), it had been extinguished- relief crews were on the scene till the early hours of the morning to dampen down hotspots.

Finally, there was ANOTHER report of a blaze on the heathland at 2am on Sunday morning (3rd August)- this time deeper into the Isle of Purbeck, at Newton Heath.

It managed to grow to a size of 70 metres by 50 metres- over half the size of a football pitch.

The Fire Service said, "Initially a crew from Weymouth were mobilised followed by further crews from Bridport, Poole, Wimborne, Christchurch, Westbourne, Redhill Park alongside lightweight off-road and support vehicles from Beaminster, Bere Regis, Dorchester, Lyndhurst (Hampshire & Isle of Wight FRS) and a water carrier from Eastleigh (Hampshire & Isle of Wight FRS)."

It's unclear at the moment what caused the fires.
