Specialist enhanced X‑ray equipment has now arrived on site in Plymouth, where an unexploded bomb has been found, allowing Royal Navy UXO experts to continue their detailed assessment of the device.

It is a historic German SC250, a 250kg air-dropped weapon.

Plymouth City Council says it's supporting this work, by providing more than 400 tonnes of sand, which is being used by specialists to build a mitigation structure to help stabilise and secure the device while assessment continues.

The council said: "We are aware that a small number of residents who have evacuated are asking if they can return to their homes to collect essential items such as medication. Unfortunately, the clear advice from the Royal Navy is that no one should re‑enter the cordon at this time.

"If you need to recover emergency or vital items, please go to the Evacuation Centre at Southway Youth and Community Centre and speak to officers there, who will be able to advise and support you.

"If you are unable to attend the centre, please call 01752 668000 for assistance.

"Whilst people might see activity happening within the cordon, this is our volunteers working to encourage the final residents that have not yet evacuated to leave their homes."
