Theatre Royal Plymouth boosts South West economy by £53.3m

Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) has delivered an estimated £53.3 million economic impact to the city of Plymouth and the wider South West during the last financial year.

The 2024/2025 figure is up from £45.9m the previous year, making it the most successful period in the theatre’s history.

Throughout 2025, the theatre sold 373,133 tickets for more than 651 performances across 100 productions.

The Theatre said shows such as the musical Hamilton, attracted visitors from across the world and sold 53,000 tickets during its six-week summer run, boosting demand for local services such as hotels, restaurants, transport, and retail businesses in Plymouth and surrounding areas.

TRP’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director James Mackenzie-Blackman, said:

“Last year’s economic impact demonstrates the extraordinary power of live theatre to invigorate a region.

"Hosting world‑class productions like Hamilton not only enriches our cultural landscape but also delivers real, measurable benefits to local businesses and communities.

"We’re proud to play a central role in the economic and cultural vitality of Plymouth.”

This year TRP is planning to produce a brand new production of FAME The Musical, and will host shows including Matilda The Musical, Miss Saigon, Legally Blonde, Moulin Rouge, Cats, and Mrs Doubtfire.
