In Stonehouse, a 27-metre exclusion zone has been established around the Evolution Cove building on Durnford Street due to fears of its structural integrity.

Authorities are worried that the building or parts of it might collapse, prompting the need for immediate action to protect public safety.

Roads such as Emma Place Ope, parts of Emma Place, Barrack Place, and Durnford Street have been closed, disrupting normal traffic flow.

A temporary diversion route has been set up to guide pedestrians while allowing continued access to other parts of the Stonehouse peninsula.

Residents in surrounding areas, especially those from Emma Street Ope, are being urged to leave their properties as a precaution.

Those unable to find alternative accommodations will receive support from the local council.

The situation arose when Centrick, the company managing Evolution Cove, evacuated the building on 20th March following identification of significant cracking in the concrete frame in its car park.

Although initial plans for structural reinforcement were to commence immediately, complexities in the repairs have led to delays, and there are concerns the building's condition has worsened.

Devon and Somerset Fire Service has enforced a prohibition order on the structure, barring all access.

Officials from Plymouth City Council, alongside other agencies, are gathering more detailed insights into the risks involved.

Gary Walbridge from Plymouth City Council stated, "Decisions about asking residents to leave their homes and closing roads are not taken lightly. The information we have is that there is a potential serious risk to the public if we keep the area open. The safety of residents, pedestrians and drivers must come first."

The council vows ongoing surveillance of the site and coordination with related agencies to ensure the affected roads and properties can reopen safely.
