Police warn about boat thefts and wildlife being disturbed
Police are working in coastal communities as they urge boat users to report anything suspicious
Police in Salcombe are trying to stop boat users disturbing wildlife - as well as offering crime safety advice and markings to locals and tourists
PC Clarke Orchard, from the force's Rural Affairs Team, said: "We have witnessed an extremely busy summer along the coast of Devon and Cornwall.
"Salcombe is a vibrant harbour and has an abundance of marine life such as local seals and cetaceans that need protecting.
"We are mindful it is a space for all to share and enjoy with various watercraft such as jet skis and boats.
“Our aim and objectives within the Rural Affairs Team are very much centred around the conservation of wildlife, habitats, species, and any other associated wildlife issues such as wildlife disturbance with watercraft but affording opportunities for other business/partnership awareness and an input from the Local Neighbourhood Police Team.
Clarke added: “Such collaborative efforts are hugely beneficial and have been positively received by partners and the local community, continuing to create awareness around Operation Seabird.
"Having colleagues and representatives from the relevant departments/partner agencies in attendance, is vital in our efforts to continue, provide and display strong links with the local maritime community.”
