Public toilets on Bideford Quay have been left with structural and internal damage after an explosion which police believe was caused deliberately.

Officers are now appealing for information as their investigation continues.

What happened

Police were called at around 5.40pm on Thursday 17th September following reports of an explosion inside the council-owned toilet block.

Investigators believe the explosion was caused deliberately, using aerosols and other flammable materials.

The blast caused structural and internal damage to the building.

Toilets to remain shut

Police are working with Torridge District Council on the investigation.

The council has advised that the toilets will remain closed to the public until they have been made safe.

Boy arrested and bailed

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of causing an explosion likely to endanger life or injure property.

He has since been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

Appeal for witnesses

Investigating officers have thanked everyone who has already helped with the investigation.

They are now appealing to anyone who witnessed the explosion, or who was in the area immediately before or after it happened, to come forward.

Officers also want to hear from anyone who was driving along Bideford Quay at the time and may have dashcam footage that could assist the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 or visit the police website, quoting reference number 50260249993.
