Plymouth’s Civic Centre pond repair set for early 2027 completion
Long-awaited restoration part of broader regeneration project
Work to repair the Grade II listed pond outside Plymouth’s Civic Centre, unused for nearly two years due to a leak, is now slated for completion by early 2027.
The pond, formerly a vibrant site for the city’s model boat club, fell into disrepair described as “an eyesore,” prompting frustration among club members who had relocated their activities across the Tamar.
Complications arose from issues with the aging pump system, budget constraints, and listed building consent challenges, as noted by Cllr Matt Smith, Plymouth City Council’s cabinet member overseeing housing and city centre regeneration.
Funding approval for the pond project is anticipated by August, falling under the broader £47 million Civic Centre regeneration initiative, which includes apartments and facilities for City College.
Incorporating the pond repair into the main building project leveraged available funds, overcoming previous financial barriers, confirmed Cllr Smith.
Concerns resurface periodically, voiced earlier this month by model boat club chairman Ron Fry and Cllr Patrick Nicholson, highlighting the leadership’s commitment to prioritizing pond restoration.
Work is expected to start before the year-end, envisioning the pond refilled and operational this time next year, restoring its role as a family and tourist attraction.
