MoD looking to sell Navy warships to Brazil
South West Devon's MP has criticised the plans
South West Devon's MP has criticised the decision to sell two Plymouth-based Naval warships to Brazil.
Rebecca Smith says HMS Bulwark has just undergone a £72 million pound refit.
HMS Albion is also part of the discussions.
Ms Smith is worried the replacement ships won't be ready until the early 2030s:
"I'm just concerned about that capability gap, particularly given where we are in the world at the moment.
"My view is having some ships that could be used in the future is better than having no ships. The big concern for me is the gap between getting rid of these ships and having new vessels."
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said:
“We can confirm we have entered discussions with the Brazilian Navy over the potential sale of HMS Bulwark and HMS Albion.
“As announced in November, both ships are being decommissioned from the Royal Navy. Neither were planned to go back to sea before their out of service dates in the 2030s.”
