Part of historic Teignmouth Pier washed away following storm
Victorian landmark loses part of its walkway, prompting sadness from residents
A historic Victorian pier in Teignmouth has suffered significant damage, with a large section of its walkway now washed away.
It follows severe weather conditions overnight.
The pier, a focal point of Teignmouth’s seafront for generations, was originally built in 1865 and has long been a defining feature of the town’s traditional seaside character.
Recent images show a chunk missing from the deck, leaving a visible gap where visitors would normally walk out over the water.
The Mayor of Teignmouth described the damage as “incredibly sad”, calling the pier a vital part of the town’s identity and a place filled with memories for residents and visitors alike.
"It's desperately sad because it's quite a focal point down on our sea front."
Despite enduring storm damage and the wear and tear that comes with age over the decades, officials say rebuilding the missing section will be particularly challenging; but decisions would have to be made by the pier's private owners.
Yellow weather warnings for heavy rain remain in place across the south-west of England, as well as Northern Ireland and parts of north-east Scotland, following a period of unsettled conditions.
