An otter cub is recovering after being discovered injured by a main road near Taunton in October.

The RSPCA said the otter, who is now called Iris was found hypothermic and lethargic.

Iris was first taken to Shepton Vets in October before moving to the RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre for specialist treatment, where staff named her Iris after treating an injury to her eye.

She also had some bite wounds to her genitals, which have since healed with treatment and time.

Iris is now receiving long-term rehabilitation at the UK Wild Otter Trust in Devon.

Ryan Walker, a wildlife supervisor at RSPCA West Hatch, said: “Her eye improved over the first few days and she was feeding herself by her second day here with us which was all really encouraging.

"She steadily put on weight and went from 900g to 2.45kg over the two weeks that we had her.”
