Liberal Democrat MP for Newton Abbot, Martin Wrigley, has joined more than 300 organisations and public figures in urging the Prime Minister to extend free school meals to every primary school child in England. He said:

"Devon schools are underfunded and free school meals would be a really good boost. If we don't increase investment in people, such as feeding children so they can learn properly, then we will lose out."

Campaigners say child hunger is becoming a growing crisis, with figures showing 3.7 million children experienced food insecurity last year.

One in five schools is now running food hubs or pantries to support struggling families.

At present, free meals are only guaranteed up to Year 2, meaning many pupils miss out as soon as they move into junior school – even though their families may still be under financial pressure.

Those backing the petition argue that making free meals universal would help children concentrate in class, improve learning outcomes, and ease the cost-of-living burden on parents.

Campaigners hope mounting support will put pressure on ministers to act.
