People and pets are being urged to avoid Littleham Brook in Exmouth following a pollution incident, according to officers investigating the matter.
Sandbags have been installed to help contain the affected area while remediation of the stream is planned.
The public is also being advised not to enter the water at Exmouth beach or nearby swimming spots until any health risk has been confirmed to have passed.
Officers have confirmed the pollution was not caused by a sewage event.
