Heavy rainfall is currently sweeping across the South West of England, bringing with it travel disruptions and a risk of surface water flooding.

The Met Office reports that the rain, which arrived from the south overnight, has become heavy and persistent, creating difficult driving conditions due to flooding and spray on the roads.

Public transport services including buses and trains may be affected, with longer journey times expected.

Regions hit by recent storms Chandra and Goretti in January are experiencing exacerbated conditions as the ground remains saturated from previous rainfall.

The risk of some homes and businesses facing flooding has increased, albeit the impact is predicted to be limited.

Specific warnings have been issued for these areas:

  • Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole
  • Cornwall
  • Devon
  • Dorset
  • Plymouth
  • Somerset
  • Torbay
  • Wiltshire

By the end of the day, rainfall is expected to reach up to 20mm in general, with certain areas seeing more than 30mm.

Travelers are urged to check road conditions and transport schedules to avoid delays.

Residents in potentially affected areas are advised to prepare flood plans and emergency kits for their safety.

With power cuts being a possibility, gathering essential items such as torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs is recommended.

Ongoing updates regarding weather warnings can provide vital information as conditions develop.
