Exeter Canal closed due to potential toxic algae risk
Water users advised to stay away following discovery of blue-green algae
Exeter Canal has been temporarily closed as a precaution after the Environment Agency detected potentially harmful blue-green algae in the nearby Exeter Flood Relief Channel at Trew’s Weir.
The algae is known for its toxic properties, posing risks to both people and pets, prompting authorities to advise the public to avoid entering the water and keep animals at a safe distance.
While tests are currently underway to determine if the algae is present in the Canal as well, Exeter City Council has decided to close the water to users as a precautionary measure.
The council assured further updates will be provided as soon as they are available.
Until test results are confirmed, locals and visitors are urged to heed the warnings and steer clear of the affected areas.
