A cordon is in place after a suspected ordnance was discovered at a building site in Plymouth.

Police were called to the site on Martin street at around 11.40am this morning (January 14).

An 100-metre cordon has been put in place around the area, and Bath Street and Martin Street are currently closed between Union Street and Millbay Road.

According to reports, Millbay Academy in Plymouth was evacuated just before lunchtime as a result of the incident.

In a statement on Facebook the school said:

"Thank you to our students, families, staff and the wider community for your cooperation and support today.

"An update has now been sent directly to all parents and carers via email and the Arbor app. Please check your messages for the latest information.

"We will continue to share information in guidance with the local police."

People are being urged to avoid the area while police work to identify the ordnance and make it safe.

The investigation remains ongoing.
