Workington man jailed for coercive control and physical abuse
Sentenced to over five years for multiple offences
A man from Workington has received a sentence of five years and six months for coercive and controlling behaviour, alongside multiple counts of actual bodily harm (ABH) and intentional suffocation.
The offences, committed by Sam Thomas, 44, from Winifred Street, were adjudicated by Carlisle Crown Court on 14th May 2026, following a long trial.
His victim suffered an extended period of abuse spanning from 1st April 2025 to 24th October 2025.
Temporary Detective Constable Jodie Proctor highlighted the gravity of the case and the constabulary's dedication to victim support.
"This was a sustained period of coercive control and physical abuse that had a significant impact on the victim," said Proctor.
Cumbria Constabulary encourages any victims of abuse to come forward, promising serious and sensitive handling of such reports.
