Operation Impact launched in Whitehaven to support businesses and ensure compliance
Cumberland Council drives initiative for cleaner, safer commercial areas
Cumberland Council has launched Operation Impact in Whitehaven, aiming to enhance business compliance and support across the town centre through engagement and guidance.
The operation integrated officers from Environmental Crime, Trading Standards, Licensing, and Planning to work directly with local businesses, promoting high standards and helping them understand their responsibilities.
During the initiative, officers visited over 20 businesses, offering advice on commercial waste management, planning compliance, and trading standards, while issuing formal notices where necessary.
Several businesses took immediate action following discussions, notably switching off or removing non-compliant illuminated signs.
Operation Impact is part of a broader programme of business engagement across Cumberland, designed to maintain high standards and improve the commercial area's appearance and management.
Councillor Mark Fryer emphasised the importance of supporting businesses while ensuring they comply with regulations.
"Operation Impact sends a clear message that we are serious about maintaining high standards across our town centres," Fryer said.
Councillor Denise Rollo highlighted the constructive nature of the initiative, applauding the positive engagement from local businesses.
Cumberland Council remains committed to working collaboratively, promoting cleaner, safer commercial areas that benefit residents, visitors, and the wider business community.
Through direct engagement, the initiative aims to encourage voluntary compliance and make informed decisions based on gathered intelligence.
