Some schools will get 20mph speed limits outside of them, while others won’t, after public consultation.

Westmorland and Furness Council has been consulting on whether or not to bring in 20mph speed limits across large parts of its council area.

Barrow is included in the proposals, with the measures having been considered outside eight schools in the town.

Now, after public consultation, the council has announced that four of the schools will not be getting 20mph speed limits on the roads nearby.

Those schools are: Barrow Island Community School, Greengate Junior School, North Walney and South Walney Infants and Primary Schools.

This is due to support having ‘not been demonstrated’ for the measures, according to the council.

Barrow Island saw 18 people in support of the proposal and five in support with amendments, while 31 objected – with a 17 per cent response rate.

For Greengate, seven were in support, one person supported with amendments and 11 objected – with an 11 per cent response rate.

For North Walney, eight people supported the proposal while 11 were against it – a five per cent response rate from 386 properties.

For South Walney, one person was in support, another was in support with amendments, while 15 were against the proposal – a response rate of four per cent.

But the council said that there was a ‘clear level of support’ for 20mph limits outside of Holy Roman Catholic School, Ormsgill Nursery and Primary School and Yarlside Primary School without amendments.

There was also support for one outside St Bernard’s RC High School, but with an amendment of including Crosslands Park Road in the 20mph speed limit, which has now been included.

Residents also asked for an extension of the 20mph zone on Rating Lane and for flashing speed limit signage, but highways officers considered those measures as being ‘against the Department for Transport guidance on setting speed limits’.
