Cumberland Council informs road users and residents of upcoming traffic changes as Phase 2 of the Workington Gateway project is set to commence.

Starting today (23rd February), the phase aims to enhance road safety and connections to employment sites and the Port of Workington, supported by over £33 million of government funding.

A one-way northbound traffic system will operate between Udale Street and Calva Brow Roundabout for about two to three weeks, alongside gas network updates brought by Northern Gas Networks.

Southbound travel will be prohibited on the A596 in this section, with traffic redirected via Northside Road and Northside Bridge to the A597.

Existing three-way traffic signals at Ramsay Brow will remain active.

Upon completion of the gas network updates, both lanes will reopen between Udale Street and the Police HQ access, with the one-way system reducing in length.

Traffic diversions and restrictions will persist until late summer 2026, and access to Seaton will remain unchanged.

Hall Brow works are targeted for completion by autumn 2026.

Cumberland Council is arranging temporary parking solutions for Hall Park View residents affected by the changes.

Cllr Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, said: “It has been fantastic to secure over £33 million in government funding for Workington. This investment will transform the town, creating opportunities for local businesses, strengthening connections, and improving the places our community uses every day.

“We understand the frustration caused by delays, but by coordinating the road and gas works we can avoid further disruption in the future. We are grateful for everyone’s patience as we deliver these enhancements.”
