Thorncliffe Crematorium scheduled to reopen following fire repair works
Extensive recovery efforts nearing completion for facility in Barrow
Thorncliffe Crematorium in Barrow is set to reopen on 30th September 2026 after significant repair and improvement works following a fire earlier this year.
The incident in March led to comprehensive investigations and recovery efforts, including structural and electrical surveys and site cleanup.
Key repairs undertaken as part of the recovery project included roof and chimney replacements, internal restoration and redecoration, and installation of upgraded cremation equipment.
Westmorland and Furness Council has invested in the facility's long-term future with upgrades to cremators and systems, ensuring a modern and efficient service for local communities.
A council spokesperson confirmed the progress, stating, "We are pleased to confirm that Thorncliffe Crematorium is scheduled to reopen on 30 September 2026 and, based on progress to date, we do not currently foresee any further delays to the programme."
The council expressed gratitude for the patience of funeral directors, bereaved families, and the community during the repair period.
Regular communication has been maintained with funeral directors, and arrangements for resuming services from 30th September have been confirmed.
As the final stages of the project approach, the community looks forward to the reopening and the continued role of the crematorium in local services.
