The Environment Agency is investigating reports of potential pollution sources in the River Derwent near Camerton.

Specialist officers have been deployed following notifications made to the agency's incident hotline.

Enforcement action will be pursued where appropriate to protect the environment and ensure any offences are properly addressed.

Reporting and background information

Suspected pollution incidents should be reported promptly to the hotline at 0800 80 70 60 or online.

Although the River Derwent section under scrutiny is not a legally designated bathing water area, the Environment Agency regularly tests bacteria levels in designated bathing water locations from May to September.

Bacteria in water bodies can originate from various sources, such as wastewater treatment plants, private septic tanks, and agricultural runoff.

Information on designated bathing waters and their quality data can be found on Swimfo.
