A Lake District mountain rescue team says it's overwhelmed by the support is has received since one of its collection boxes was broken into.

The Penrith Mountain Rescue Team discovered the vandalised box on Tuesday (8 July) at Mardale Head after returning from a long night of emergency call-outs.

The stolen cash had been donated by members of the public and was intended to help fund their lifesaving work.

After sharing news of the theft, the team says they’ve been moved by the generosity shown, with donations approaching £2,500 in just two days.

They say this support is a huge boost towards their operational costs, especially as they continue fundraising for a new base.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the theft and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
