An injured man who fell in the Lake District has been rescued after a mountain rescue operation lasting almost 13 hours.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out on Tuesday night (22 September) after Cumbria Police received a report of someone shouting on the fells.

The person who called police was able to give rescuers an idea of where the shouting was coming from, in the Lord's Rake area.

A reply from the man confirmed he had fallen and injured his head, arm, back and leg.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was sent to the area, along with Duddon & Furness Mountain Rescue Team and Coastguard helicopter R897.

The helicopter couldn't carry out the rescue because of low cloud, but the crew was able to spot the man and give rescuers his location.

Eleven members of the Wasdale team were flown as close to the scene as possible, taking ropes, a stretcher, first aid equipment and other rescue gear with them.

Once they reached the area, the teams worked to find the man and set up a rope system to bring him down safely.

The rescue was made harder by bad weather. At 2.40am, with rescuers becoming tired and the man still needing to be brought down, Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called in to help.

They arrived as the teams were getting ready to bring the man down.

He was safely taken off the fell and handed over to ambulance crews.

The rescue ended at 9.38am, after 12 hours and 49 minutes.

A Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team spokesperson said "Back at base, the team dried out kit and tucked into a well-earned bacon and sausage sandwich - with a few extra members turning out to reset the vehicles so those who'd just spent 13 hours on the hill could finally get some sleep.

"Massive thanks to Duddon & Furness MRT, Cockermouth MRT, and Coastguard R897 for turning out in such extreme and difficult conditions.

"Stay safe out there - and always let someone know your plans."
