Workington man who spat in face of female police officer jailed again
Kieran Winder spat at her after being released from prison on licence
A Workington man who spat in the face of a female police officer after being released from prison on licence has been given another jail term.
In June last year, 33-year-old Kieran Winder was handed a 26-month custodial sentence by a judge at Carlisle Crown Court for a number of offences.
Winder, latterly of Hunday Court, had been caught helping two others as an address on Workington’s Rydal Street was burgled in May, 2024. Upon his arrest, he assaulted an officer and damaged a patrol vehicle.
While on bail Winder — who committed his first criminal offence in 2007 — punched his then girlfriend on four separate occasions and smashed her phone.
The judge who jailed Winder observed that the defendant had “never ceased to act in a violent way" during 18 years of offending.
Winder was later released from the prison sentence on licence.
But on 18th January he was arrested again after police were called to an incident in Workington. Prosecutor Diane Jackson said Winder had spat deliberately into a female police officer’s face.
“With a spit on the face, there is a chance of transmission of diseases,” said Mrs Jackson as Winder appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this morning (Fri). He admitted common assault of an emergency worker.
Appearing over a video link from custody — having been recalled until January, 2027 — Winder disputed that it had been a deliberate spit at the constable.
Magistrates concluded that Winder’s latest crime was aggravated by his criminal record, and the fact he had offended while on prison licence.
Winder was given a four-week jail term. This will be served alongside the remainder of his current sentence as magistrates had no legal power to impose a consecutive term.
Winder was also ordered to pay the police officer £150 compensation.
