Significant progress is being made across the park, with new tree planting underway and construction of the new skate park advancing rapidly.

Earlier this month, Cumberland Council Chair Andy Semple and Carlisle Town Deal Board Chair David Wright took part in the latest phase of tree planting.

Copper Beech trees were planted near the Multi-Use Games Area, contributing to a total of 300 new trees planned across the park.

These additions aim to create a greener, healthier, and more visually striking space for residents and visitors.

Following last year’s public consultation, cherry blossom and tulip trees were selected for planting after receiving the highest number of votes, reflecting strong community support.

Meanwhile, construction of the new skate park is progressing well.

Recent work includes:

  • Stone built up to form the sub-structure of ramps
  • Ramp profiles fully shaped
  • Timber framing installed in preparation for concrete pouring

These milestones keep the skate park on track for its planned Spring opening, when the facility will be available for public use.

Cllr Andy Semple, Chair of Cumberland Council, said:

“It’s fantastic to see such real, tangible progress at Hammond’s Pond. The new planting and the development of the skate park are already bringing fresh energy to the site and helping create a park that future generations will be proud of. This project is a great example of how investment in green spaces can strengthen communities and improve quality of life.”

David Wright, Chair of the Carlisle Town Deal Board, added:

“Start with the Park is all about putting people, nature and wellbeing at the heart of Carlisle’s future."

"Seeing the plans taking shape at Hammond’s Pond is incredibly exciting, and it reflects the strong partnership between the community, the Town Deal Board and Cumberland Council. We’re delighted to support a project that will offer lasting benefits for residents and visitors alike.”

The project also includes the Greenway, a multi-modal route connecting St Cuthbert’s Garden Village to Carlisle City Centre, providing high-quality leisure and recreation facilities.

Start with the Park is part of Cumberland Council’s £100 million regeneration programme for Carlisle, funded through the Future High Streets Fund, Town Deal, and Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal initiative.

The wider programme focuses on improving infrastructure, supporting economic growth, and creating an attractive, accessible environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Cumberland Council will continue to provide updates as Hammond’s Pond transforms into a vibrant, welcoming, and environmentally rich destination for the whole community.
