A campaign group is welcoming an appeal being dropped by Cumbria's water firm - about releasing data on sewage being discharged into Lake Windermere.

Last year - we told you millions of litres had been pumped into the lake illegally.

The Information Commissioner Office said United Utilities needed to release environmental information requested by the Save our Windermere group.

The water company say they welcome clarifications that have come from the Commissioner's Office.

Matt Staniek, who's from Save our Windermere called it a 'monumental victory'.

He added;

"We hope United Utilities will continue this newfound commitment to transparency and make strides in collecting more comprehensive data to fully assess their impact on Windermere.

"Should the need arise, Save Windermere will not hesitate to fight for transparency again."

A United Utilities spokesperson, said:

“In our commitment to being more transparent, we are making information even more accessible.

"We welcome clarifications made by the Information Commissioner’s Office and will continue to engage with its processes to ensure what is disclosed falls under the scope of EIR.

“In Windermere we have, so far, invested £75 million upgrading our treatment works and pumping stations.

"We are now delivering at pace a further £200m of investment in the catchment as we make further improvements to ensure we treat wastewater to even higher standards alongside significantly reducing discharges from the six storm overflows that discharge into the Lake.”
