Plans have been approved for the refurbishment of the former Hotel Majestic on Duke Street, Barrow, which is a Grade II listed building and has been vacant for two years.

The future Garner Hotel, part of the IHG brand, will see a new interior, replacement of 12 windows, and attachment of new signage, as proposed by developer Ashall Projects Limited.

Acknowledging the building's poor state, the Liberal Democrat-led Westmorland and Furness Council granted listed building consent on 10th September, requiring that work protect the character and appearance of the historic structure, including maintaining white window frames.

No objections were raised against the plans, although planning officers noted that the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England must be notified ahead of any demolition.

The Hotel Majestic, dating back to 1904, resides within the Central Barrow Conservation Area.

Ownership changed in January, according to the documents, and the new Garner Hotel aims to supplement the adjacent Holiday Inn Express by offering rooms suitable for longer stays, complete with kitchenettes.

The new establishment targets the short-term worker market, particularly contractors associated with BAE Systems, offshore wind projects, and Furness General Hospital.
