Amber Weather Warning in force across Cumbria

There are road closures and thousands of homes without power

An amber weather warning for winds has come into force across Cumbria.

The Met Office has advised people to secure loose items outside homes as there could be a danger to life caused by flying debris.

Thousands of homes are already without power.

In Carlisle damage has been reports at the Sansa Centre.

A spokesman for Cumberland Council said;

“Due to the impact of Storm Éowyn, The Sands Centre, Carlisle is closed today (Friday 24 January). The high winds have caused damage to the temporary canopy installed as part of the RAAC replacement on the Sands’ auditorium roof.

“The centre has been closed and the damage is being assessed.

“The Sands Centre and Swifts car parks have both closed. Do not return to vehicles if you are parked in these car parks until you are advised it is safe to do so.

“Newmarket Road has been closed and a Police corden is place.

“We will provide updates as soon as they are available.”

In Scotland - the whole of the A75 has been closed due to several incidents on that stretch of road.

National Highways, which operates motorways and major A roads in England, has urged motorists to plan for disruption on Friday.

It has warned of "a particularly high risk" that high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes could be blown over.

Chris Wood, a roadside technician at the AA wsaid:

"First and foremost drivers should consider if their journey is necessary or consider waiting until the storm has passed.

"If you need to travel, choose main roads if you can, as these are less likely to be exposed to fallen branches and debris."

Rail passengers could become stranded as many services across the region have been cancelled.

Multiple operators have issued a 'Do Not Travel Notice'.
