Man in court over shooting death of boy, 8, on Cumbrian farm
Allan Thursby is accused of gross negligence manslaughter
A man has made his first appearance in court charged with the unlawful killing of an eight-year-old boy.
Jay Cartmell sustained serious injuries in an incident involving the discharge of a firearm on land near Warcop, Cumbria, on September 28 2024.
The youngster, from Frizington, Cumbria, was rushed to hospital by air ambulance but was later pronounced dead.
Allan Thursby, 64, of Dent Place, Cleator Moor, is accused of gross negligence manslaughter.
No plea was entered to the allegation as he attended Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Thursby will next appear at Carlisle Crown Court on April 24 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
District Judge Philip Holden granted him bail with a condition that he does not approach or contact Jay’s parents.
