Take on Hadrians Wall in 2026 – The Big Hike
A 20km hike packed with history, iconic landmarks and a proper physical challenge.
Challenge yourself in 2026 and join Challenge Northumberland as we take on a 20km hike along Hadrian’s Wall – one of the most famous and fascinating landmarks in the UK. Taking place across Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May 2026, this is our most historical hike to date, and we’d love you to be part of it.
Nearly 2,000 years after it was built, Hadrian’s Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern England. A remarkable amount still remains today – from forts and settlements to ‘mile castles’, bath houses, barracks, ramparts and long, uninterrupted stretches of the wall itself.
But don’t be fooled by the scenery and the history – this isn’t a challenge for the light-hearted.
This 20km route will push trekkers to their limit as you aim to conquer steep inclines, including the highest point at 1,000ft, and complete the challenge in under 8 hours.
Starting at the beautiful Walltown Country Park, the route celebrates Northumberland heritage as you trek through stunning valleys and fells, passing some of the most well-known and talked-about spots along the wall. Highlights include Housesteads Roman Fort, the site of the Sycamore Gap, plus Crawfields Quarry, Steel Rigg and Crag Lough – all alongside those breathtaking stretches of wall that have stood the test of time.
Along the way, you’ll not only take on exhilarating gradients to really push yourself, you’ll also pick up a wealth of knowledge from the guides – experts in the 2,000-year history of Hadrian’s Wall. The hike is led by the brilliant Challenge Northumberland team and supported by volunteer guides.
This hike is open to the public, as well as charities and groups looking for a great day out in the incredible scenery Northumberland has to offer.
All finishers will receive a memento from the day, and you’ll also have access to free transport back to the start at Walltown Country Park.
