Spoof caller targeting Warwickshire residents
Investigators believe the scammers are ‘spoofing’ a legitimate Warwickshire landline number to make the calls appear genuine
Residents are being urged to stay vigilant following several reports of a phone scam involving an individual claiming to be a police officer.
According to Warwickshire police, the caller has been contacting members of the public from the number 01926 450000, attempting to obtain sensitive personal information last night (16 October).
Investigators believe the scammers are ‘spoofing’ a legitimate Warwickshire landline number to make the calls appear genuine.
The fraudster claims to be a PC Andy Lawson—however, authorities have confirmed no such officer exists within the force.
During the calls, the impersonator reportedly cites false incident numbers and claims to be conducting an investigation, before asking victims to provide usernames and passwords to online services.
Police have launched an investigation into the reports and are reminding the public that officers will never ask for sensitive details such as login credentials over the phone.
“If you’re in any doubt about a caller’s legitimacy, hang up immediately and contact us directly on 101,” a spokesperson said. “A genuine police officer will have no issue with you verifying their identity.”
Residents are also being encouraged to check in with vulnerable friends, relatives, and neighbours to ensure they are aware of the scam and know what to do if they receive a suspicious call.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or who has information about the scam should contact Warwickshire Police via the force’s official website.
