Three men jailed after machete attack in Rugby
The victim suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to hospital where he had emergency surgery to repair a punctured lung
Three men have been handed jail sentences for admitting violent disorder and using a machete to assault another man in Rugby town centre.
It follows an incident, in which police received a number of reports of a group with weapons chasing after someone on Clifton Road around 4.40pm on 31 July 2020.
The victim – a then 18-year-old man – suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to hospital where he had emergency surgery to repair a punctured lung.
After extensive investigation and examination of CCTV, officers identified Alanzo Scarlett, Brian Ayamba Ashu, Cheetij Pun and a fourth man, who can’t be named for legal reasons.
Scarlett, 26, of Pershore Road, Birmingham, Ayamba Ashu, 25, of Phipps Avenue, Rugby, and Pun, 24, of Morton Gardens, Rugby, were all arrested, interviewed and subsequently charged.
All four of them appeared at Warwick Crown Court earlier this year, where they pleaded guilty to violent disorder while Pun and Ashu also admitted section 20 assault (unlawfully and maliciously wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm on another person).
At the same court on Friday (28 March) they were sentenced to:
- Pun and Ashu – 36 months for violent disorder and 12 months for s20 assault (to be served concurrently
- Scarlett – 26 months for violent disorder
The fourth man will be sentenced at a later date.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Kat Brock said: “This is a good outcome and I’m grateful to everyone who has been involved in this lengthy investigation.
"The victim was fortunate not to suffer more serious injuries and the sentences reflect the severity of the incident.
"I hope this serves as a deterrent for people who carry a knife. I promise your actions will have consequences and you will end up behind bars.”
