Solar plan set to power Coventry schools
First phase of green energy rollout submitted by Coventry City Council
A new solar power scheme for Coventry schools has been confirmed by the city council, with planning applications submitted to install panels at three sites across the city.
The proposals form the first phase of a wider green energy programme designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut rising energy bills, which can be affected by global pressures such as conflicts and supply disruptions.
Energy firm E.ON has submitted the applications as part of a strategic partnership with Coventry City Council.
The scheme is supported by £2.3 million of Government funding and is expected to be expanded to more schools in future.
Cllr Lynnette Kelly, Labour’s Deputy Leader and the Cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change, said: “This is a great step forward in bringing solar energy to more schools across Coventry, this group of three schools are the first of fifteen and of course our wider ambition is for all schools in the city.
“We have solar on lots of buildings across the city and this initiative will help schools reduce their energy bills and become more energy resilient. This will create better environments for pupils to learn.
“With £2.3 million of Government funding secured, this is just the start of a wider programme to support schools with more sustainable, energy-efficient buildings across the city.”
The three schools included in the first phase are Grange Farm Primary School in Finham, Manor Park Primary School in Cheylesmore, and Tiverton School in Whitley. All applications are still awaiting approval.
Elsewhere, separate regeneration and building works have been approved at Spon Gate Primary School in Spon End, including the demolition of two existing buildings and construction of a new school block.
At Baginton Fields School in Willenhall, further plans linked to previously approved works have also been submitted, covering a new classroom block, hydrotherapy pool extension and other facility upgrades for pupils with special educational needs.
