Sex offenders may face ban from council homes in Nuneaton and Bedworth
New housing policy amendments remain under consideration
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has proposed amendments to its Housing Allocation Policy, which may bar individuals convicted of serious sexual offences from applying for a council home.
The proposed changes introduce clearer guidelines on applicants convicted of serious sexual offences or subjected to specific court orders, such as Sexual Harm Prevention Orders.
While the policy does not impose a lifetime ban, disqualification can last up to 12 months before reapplication is considered, provided the candidate demonstrates evidence of rehabilitation and changed behaviour.
These changes are intended to enhance community safety, ensuring the housing register remains fair and transparent.
According to the council, this does not result in current tenants losing their homes, nor does it affect existing statutory homelessness duties.
Additionally, the policy updates reflect existing legal requirements regarding eligibility based on immigration status. This amendment does not imply a complete ban on foreign nationals; eligibility will be assessed case-by-case, in compliance with national legislation.
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council manage approximately 5,619 council homes across the borough.
James Bartlett, Portfolio Holder for Housing, stated: “The residents of Nuneaton and Bedworth who rely on council housing and those that are patiently waiting on the council housing register have been let down and ignored for far too long."
Bartlett affirmed the amendments aim to fortify decisions that account for individual circumstances and statutory duties, marking a preliminary step towards enhanced council housing improvements in Nuneaton and Bedworth.
The proposed policy change will require ratification at a full council meeting before implementation.
